History of McKinney

McKinney has a rich history that dates back to 1841 when the pioneers settled on the land. Since then, the city has preserved their unique history and the foundation that shaped the town.

The area grew slowly at first, but with lush greens and fertile soil, it was a perfect spot for agriculture. The Houston and Texas Central Railroad in 1872 helped with reliable transportation to transport people and goods in and out of McKinney. This is what really sparked rapid growth in this town. Cotton boomed over the next 50 years, and along with wheat, oats, and corn, the city was a top producer in the state of these goods.

With the growing success of the agriculture, the economy in McKinney took off. Larger homes were built with better infrastructures, churches, flour mills, an opera house, etc. were all in business.

Growth Today

The town is rapidly growing, to this day. It was featured as Money Magazine's #1 Best Place to Live in 2014 in the country, due to the thriving economy, safe location, strong leadership, and people that are devoted to their town.
